Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
BACKGROUND
In its first year, Metro Rewind transformed ridership data into something riders had never seen before: a personal, shareable reflection of who they were and how they moved through the DMV. It sparked competition, pride, and conversation—turning everyday trips into cultural currency.
Rewind didn’t just perform. It set expectations.
So the challenge for this year wasn’t whether to bring Metro Rewind back—it was how do we top ourselves. How do you evolve an experience that riders already loved, without repeating the same trick? How do you make something familiar feel bigger, fresher, and more shareworthy?
THE CHALLENGE
To raise the bar, Metro Rewind needed to evolve from a personal recap into a collective moment:
STRATEGY
We shifted Metro Rewind from a data summary to a cultural expression.
The insight: riders don’t just use Metro to get around—they help define the rhythm, character, and identity of the region. If last year was about seeing yourself in the data, this year was about seeing yourself in the DMV.
THE IDEA
Metro Rewind is the DMV—collaged.
This year’s Metro Rewind draws inspiration from the past, the present, and the pulse that moves through the entire region. Each experience blends personal ridership data with iconic sights, symbols, and moments that only a true DMVer would recognize.
The DMV is a tapestry of cultures, neighborhoods, and stories and Metro is the thread that ties them all together.
THE EXPERIENCE
Throughout the year, Metro collects transit data to build a snapshot of each rider’s journey—total trips, top stations, and riding patterns—then transforms it into a bold, highly visual experience.
These collages aren’t just representations of data. They’re portraits of place and people. A way for riders to see how their daily movement contributes to something larger than themselves.
To support that vision, the experience was rebuilt with key enhancements:
The result is a smoother, more immersive experience—designed not just to be viewed, but shared.
